The weather was line at Napier-yesterday, but as such a great deal ■' of rain fell last week, the going on the racing track will bo very heavy. Sleaco'mbo went slightly lame when being schooled over the fences at Grecnmoadows yesterday, ' and may not see the post in the Hack Hurdles to-day. The New Zealand-bred Waiputia, who has not been a pronounced success since going to Australia, is now being tried ■over, hurdles in Adelaide. At Hastings yesterday, H. Hickey Bent Niwaru and Am.ito for a gallop over six furlongs. Although Aniato had the best of tho weights, he was . of no use to his companion, who had the best of tho gallop throughout. Weights for the.first day's events at tiiu Wellington Racing Club's Winter meeting aro due on Juno 27. The Winter meeting of the Ashburton County Racing Club takes place tomorrow and on Friday. Itacola, who showed a fair turn of 6peed in the hack races at the Hawko's Bay Jockey Club's meeting last week, will be a starter at the Napier Park meeting to-day, where the hack fields do not look quite so formidable as they were at Hastings. .Mr. W. A. Menuics, the V.B.C. handicapper, has, it is understood, been asked to do the handicapping for Mr. J. Wren's meetings (says the Sydney "Referee").' If the V.R.C. Committee do not object, he will doubtless accept tho appointment. .Mr. Godfrey Watson starts at Flemington, and is also starter .at Mr. Wren's meetings.- . Sir Frisco was taken through to Napiei on Monday, and tho bay horse will bo a starter in the principal handicap at Groenmeadows to-day. As at Levin, lie will bo ridden by T. Carmont. Among the candidates for tho Petano Haok Handicap to-day. is Royal Maid, who has only 41b. more than tho niiui.rauni. During the past week, Mataari has been trained on the Hastings track, and he was responsible for a couple of vjsehil gallops there.. Unfortunately Mataari's joints are none too sound, but while tho tracks are as soft as they bio at present he should race we'll. he Beau was schooled at Napior yesterday, and with T. Pritcbard in the saddle the Auckland horse cleared the big fences in • a most attractive style. ■ Pritcbard is to ride Lo Beau in the Napier Steeplechase this afternoon. Several of tire jockeys who used to ride at the Miram'ar pony meetings have crossed to Australia at different times, hut, up till the present, nono ol thera have achieved fame, though several of them havp gained notoriety. ' Somo months back one of them received a. license to ride, in Melbourne, but, after he had taken part iu one, race, ho was requested to hand Ills licenso back aga.vn. Another ox-Jliramar jockey received a life disqualification, in Quecns- . land for an unsatisfactory display in a. two-horse race. Then (according to a. Sydney paper) two jockeys, not unknown at. Miramar, have recently had their licenses cancelled by the pony authorities in Sydney. The death at Brighton of "Farmer" Giles, a. sterling jockey of the old-fash-ioned school, revives moro than ona memo*' of a .quarter of a century ago, relates a London scribe. At Ascot, for instance, just before a Biennial, lie was stopped' on the step-.! of tho wcighingTcom by Mr. Mackenzie, who, mistaking him for Charles Wood, asked him what eort of a. third his horse had been in tie Guineas. Though Giles had only
witnessed tho race from tho jockeys' cock-loft, ho spoke so well of tho horso that Air. Mackenzie said: "Very well, then; go and get the colours on and I'll run Mm." Giles lost no time in getting into tho tartan jacket, and— Child of tho Atist won in a c.ijifer. "Thank you, Wood, thank you, Wood!" cried the delighted owner, a.s tho colt was being unsaddled. "Giles, if you don't mind, sir," the "Farmer" corrected, drily; and Wood, when ho hoard of it, perspired so freely that ho could have doro 7st. 61b. in tlio next raco without a ten-mile walk.
