MYSTERIOUS RAPPINGS.
A MASTERTON STORY. In a well-governed community like Mastorton (writes our correspondent), it is somewhat distressing to learn of tho presence of "spooks."- But, if the experiences of a level-headed resident go for anything, there is something out of the ordinary hovering around his blissful liabitat. On several nights recently he has been alarmed at tho vigorous rappings on the side of his house, and ho and bis family have become so thoroughly scared that they have unceremoniously quitted the tenement. Last night a party of respectablo towns-" men, strong in staturo and stout in heart, eager to gain an acquaintance with "spookland," spent two hours investigating tho phenomenon. All sorts of inducements were held out to the mysterious "rapper" to honour tho company with its presence, but all in vain. There was nothing to disturb the serenity of the midnight, and, as half a dozen belated husbands endeavoured to explain their late return to tho bosom of their family, they felt that even the moon was mocking at their simplicity.
