MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special OorresDondent.i Masterton, June 21. Mr. R. H, Daniell, secretary of tho Mastorton branch of the Navy League, has received a letter from the Prime Minister, acknowledging receipt of a resolution urging that the Government should assist the league by purchasing lanterns and slides for use as desired throughout the Dominion, noting the resolution, and intimating that the matter will receive the consideration of tho Government. A goodly number of townspeople (including Mr. G. li. Sykcs, secretary of the Masterton A. and P. Association) have proceeded to tho Palnierston North winter show. The total rainfall registered in Masterton for the four clays ending Monday morning (as computed by Mr. J. G. IJoddington) was 2.G7 inches. At a meeting on Monday night of the Wairarapa Ladies' Hockey Association, Messrs. H. Kateh, .IS. Ireson, and W. J. Baniiin were appointed a Selection Committeo for the season. It was decided to register tho colours of the Wairarapa Association as navy blue skirt and blouse, with emerald green belt, tin, and cap. The Men's Hockey Association met on Monday evening, when Mr. S.'Hunter was appointed to the Management Committee, vice Mr. M. M'lntosh, resigned. It was decided that tho senior representatives play Wellington for the shield on July 9, and that games with the shield team and the "B" representatives bo played at Carterton on July 14 and at Masterton on July 21, the senior fixtures being postponed on both days. Mr. A. C. Major was appointed manager of the team to play tor the shield. Messrs. C. Cole, J. M'Gininty, and G. Sievers wero appointed a junior selection committee. Tho annual five-aside tournament and smoke concert was fixed for tho first Thursday after the fixtures. It was decided to send tho representative team on tour to play Wanganui on July 26, and Manawatu on July 27. Mr. A. TV. Hogg, M.P., has donated £1 Is. to the funds of the local branch of tho Navy League. The Masterton Fire Board held its annual meeting yesterday, when the members inspected the fire- brigade station, which is in course of construction, and also the station in Church Street. Good progress is being made by tho contractors with the now building. Tho recent heavy rains have had a good effect in reducing tho number of rabbits on some of tho outlying properties One settler informs the writer that- his man discovered twenty or thirty drowned rabbits in a single morning. , Tho Mastorton Parliamentary Union mot again on Monday evening, when the second reading of the Land Bill was carried, after a warm discussion. Tho House then went into Committeo on the measure. The Minister for Education gave notico of his intention to introduce- a Bill for tho.repeal of all existing Acts referring to taxation, and substituting therefor a graduated income tax. ' Dr Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, was m Mastorton this morn!!!ftV and r P, roce ,?S¥' witb a sub-com-inttee of the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, to inspect the Greytown Hospital, a portion 0 f which it is proposed to reconstruct. It is probable that Mr. L. G. Reid tho newly-appointed Stipendiary Magistrate for tho Wairarapa, will arrive in Alasterton early in July. _ At the monthly meeting last evening of the Lansdowno School Committee Mr. A. W. Hogg, M.P, was nominated for re-election to the Wellington Education Board. The average '.at-
tendance for the past eleven months was reported to ho 145, the percentage of attendance to roll number being 94. The committee resolved not to entertain a request to join the Wairarapa School Committees' Association. The Masterton Fire Board has decided to proceed with the installation of electric fire alarms. Subject to the approval of the estimates by tho Minister, the following levies are to be made by the board for the ensuing year, after allowing for the Government contribution:— Masterton Borough Council, £463 ss. Gd.; contributory insurance companies, £403 os. 6d. pro rata.
