Cnsolberg, ono of tho vicepresidents 'of the Masterton branch of tho Navy League, has donated .€5 to the funds of that institution. The "Wairnrapa Daily Times" understands that in all probability Mr. C. A. Pownall will bo a candidate for tho Masterton seat at tho next general election. Mr. Pownall himself, however, has made no announcement to this effect. Mr. C. J. Tocker, who for somo months past lias been in charge of tho outfields connected with the local Presbyterian Church, leaves next month to tako up similar work at Eltham. Mr. R. Burton, who has been superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School at Kuripuni for many years, has been presented by the staff and scholars with a handsomely-upholstered armchair on the occasion of his retirement. Bro. Shapcott (Chief Ranger) and Bro. Jessen (District Secretary of I'orestcrs) paid an official visit to the Masterton Court on Friday, when a social evening was held. Tho election of officers resulted in Bro. J. B. Rue being elected C.R.; Bro. W. Murphy, S.C.R.; Bro. YV. Candy, treasurer; Bro. V. E.. Darroch, secretary; Bro. Bircholl, S.W.; Bro. Lambourn, J.W.; Bro. 11. Wimsett, 5.8.; and Bro. Hendry, J.B. Two new members wero initiated. The suggestion made by your representative that an effort should bo made to advertise the resources of the district by the holding of an exhibition of produce, etc., has -been speodily taken up by the Chamber of Commerce. At a meeting of the council of that body on Friday niternoon, Mr. G. C. Summerell mentioned tho matter, and said he was of opinion that a committee should bo appointed to go into the whole matter. Mr. Moodie suid that Masterton had now become such an important centre that, thero was every indication that a fairly good winter show could be held locally. Mr. Ilnnter suggested bringing the question beforo the A. and P. Association. After further discussion it was decided to ask tho t A..and P. Association to appoint a special subcommittee to meet a sub-eommittco of the Chamber of Commerce with a. view to promulgating of somo scheme for the further advertising of the resources of the Dominion. Tho monthly meeting of the council of tho Masterton Chamber of Commerce was held on Friday afternoon, Mr. J. B. Moodie occupying the chnir. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £3 15s. 2d.. Mr. G. AY. Sellar was elected 1 a new member of the chamber. Mr. J. B. Moodio was appointed delegate to attend the conference of chambers to bo held in Palmerston North on Friday next, to discuss the desirableness of forming a North Island Railway League. A letter was read from tho postmaster, giving details of. tho time occupied in sorting tho midday mail, and submitting that the very serious inconvenience alleged to have been caused to business people by the delay in the sorting of the mnil was not borne out by facts.- It was finally decided that the letter bo received, and that the postmaster be thanked. for his information.

The Masterton Parliamentary Union has received a challenge to a debate from (ha Maryborough Debating Society. It. is probable that, should satisfactory arrangements bo made, the debate will take placo at an early date.

Mr. E. 0. Jarrett, a well-known poultry breeder, of Masterton, has supplied a number of White Leghorn hens to the Boys' Training Home at Eltham. So satisfied is the manager of the homo with tho result, that he has sent an order for a further supply.

The opinion was expressed by Mr. Hardy --.Donald at the meeting of tho Council of the Chamber of Commerce on Friday: that the only solution of the difficulty of tho inconvenieneo. orer mails was the reinstatement of the early train from Wellington. The importance to the district of this train cannot bo over-esti-mated, and Masterton will never be satisfied until it is reinstated.

A considerable number of Masterton residents and settlers of the- district havo expressed their intention of visiting the winter show at Palmerston North next week. This is what is termed tho "oiF season" with dairy farmers, and is tho only time of the year that they can spare a few days from their homes.

Speaking of the "off season" reminds the writer of the poor facilities which are offered those engaged in the dairy industry for getting about the country on holiday and other pursuits. -If special railway excursion tickets were offered this class of. tho community for a period in tho winter months, it would bo a concession very much appreciated.

A golf match which was to have been played on tbo Lansdowne links on Saturday afternoon, between teams representing the Masterton and Pnhintwi Clubs, was abandoned owing to tho latter b'cing unable to get away a team.

Tho weather continues bitterly cold and boisterous, and tho temperature is lower than it has been for many months. The ranges aro covered with snow, and thero has been a fall on somo of tho open country.

The Masterton Amateur Operatic Society will sustain a heavy loss by the resignation of its secretary, Mr. A. C. Paul, who is ucidor transfer orders. Mr. Paul, who is on the staff of tho local, branch of the Bank of Australasia, has been a valuable acquisition to musical and social circles during his stay in Masterton.
