THE TAVIDNI. Among tlio arrivals yesterday was tho Union Compirny's Taviuni, from southern ports. She leaves to-day for Picton, Westport, and Greymouth. This is her first business trip after her long sojourn on the Westport beach, where she was tossed up by the waves and subsequently relaunched and towed round to Port Chalmers, this tow being one of the longest successfully accomplished on this coast by a tug-boat. A long rest for the recovered steamer followed at the Port Chalmers wharves. Recently a collier was required, she was chosen, and a start was made to convert a deal of her passenger space into coal accommodation. Tho repairing of her stern frame and tho fitting to it of a new sternpost was also put in hand. This post, on which the rudder is hung, was always square in section until very recently, when the round type was introduced at some of the shipbuilding yards. The Taviuni is the first vessel in the Dominion' to bo fitted with this latest typo of sternpost. and people conversant with such things say that at tho Maori Ironworks a good job was jnade of welding tho round post to the stern frame.
