A conference of bakers and pastrycooks, attended by representatives of the southern unions,, has just concluded in Auckland. It was decided to federate all unions of bakers and pastrycooks in the Dominion as early as possible. Claims will bo formulated as the basis of a Dominion award, and will be accepted as the standard for affiliated unions. The executive council will be in Auckland for twelve months.. Mr. Veale was appointed secretary. FIRE. Christchurch, June 18. A fire occurred this morning in the upstairs portion of the residence of George Gerard, of Fendalton. ,It is a wooden houso of twenty rooms. The brigade went out with its steam engine, and tho fire was confined to tho upper floor, although the other rooms and the furniture were considerably damaged by water and removal. The house was insured for ,£2500, and the furniture for ,£SOO, in the Koyal office. Later. The fire originated in a linen closet on the first floor and tho smoke from it caused a child in an adjoining bedroom to have a fit of coughing which awakened Mr. Gerard. On tho way out to tho fire, tho motor chemical broke down, but tlie "steamer" arrived, and with the water obtained from a creek at the back of the house, got tho flames under. ,Two bedrooms on the first floor were ba'dly damaged by fire and the looms beneath by water. The building" and stables were insured for ,£2600 and the contents of the' building for ,£SOO in the Eoyal office. INTOXICATING LIQUORS. Timaru, June 18. Complaints having been made by tho Ministers' Association that drinking was going on in tho Drill Hall, a meeting of officers was held last night at which the Revs. Hunt and Stinson were present by invitation. After hearing the ministers the officers resolved that in future no intoxicating liquors bo allowed in tho Drillshcd on any occasion. A FEMALE SURGICAL WARD. Napier, June 18. The Hospital Trustees have received a donation of ,£SOO from Mrs. Robjohns, a very old settler, towards the erection of a female surgical ward. DEFENCE. Dunedin, Juno 18. It is understood that, as a result of tho defence reorganisation, tho Dunedin Navals, who havo existed sinco 1884, will bo disbanded, and tho Port Chalmers Navals retained.
