(From Our Own Correspondent.) $ Members present at the monthly meeting of tlio l'etono District High School Committee, held last evening, were- Messrs. D. M'Kenzio (chairman), Kirk, Abrahall, Burd, Rev. A. Thomson, and llev. J. 1). Russell. The headmaster (Mr. W. Foster) reported that tlio miniber 011 tlio roll at tlio commencement of the month ivas G32; admitted during the month, 22; withdrawn, 12; total on the roll at the end of the month, 610; average half daily attendance, 5-M or 85 per cent. This avcrngo is low, this being diio partly to illnesses incidental to winter, and partly to tlio bad weathor. The playground, it was reported, was in a very unsatisfactory, state, having' little or 110 drainage, and tlio school building and offices are .unapproachable except at tlio cost' of wet feet. Tlio committeo resolved to write to the Education Board pointing out that the school ground had not been properly graded since tlio- playground has been put in order, and ask them to do tlio work as speedily as possible. The unsatisfactory state of the secondary school was also mentioned by a member of the committee, and it was resolved, on tlio motion of tho Rev. Mr. Thomson, that JJio chairman ask Dr. Ross to furnish a report 011 the sanitary condition of tho building (classrooms, etc.), and that his. report be sent on to the board. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Abrahall, that the committeo join the School, Committees' Association. Messrs. Townsend, M'Kenzie, and the llev. Mr. Thomson were appointed tho committee's delegates to tho association. Permission was granted to the l'etono Brass Band to use the schoolroom for practice purposes. Sir. Austin was granted tho use of a right-of-way to his residenco through the school grounds, Tho .secretary (Mr. Burd) announced that tho proceeds from tho Mascotto Picture Company's entertainment were approximately £6 6s. The monthly meeting of tho Pctono West School Committeo was hold last evening, tliero being present Messrs. Castlo (chairman'), Cotton, Marsden, Davis, Snow, and Maynard. Tho (Education Board offered a set of historical pictures and a rilio rack for tho uso of tho school. It was dccided to thank tho board for its oll'er. Tho action of the headmaster (Mr. Bodingficld) in dispensing with dinner 'hour on wet days and concluding school an hour earlier, so as to prevent tho children from getting wot, was endorsed by tho committee? It was fuithcr decidcd to authorise the headmaster to uso his own discretion in this matter 011 future occasions.
