The Pope has stopped the publication in Germany of the Encyclical in connection with the tercentenary, of Cardinal Borromeo, not wishing to rupturo the alliance between the Catholic Centre and Conservative Agrarians in tho German Reichstag. [The Encyclical was stated to be aimed at the Modernists. The King of Saxony, who is a Catholic, expressed his regret tha.t his efforts to promote religious peace should bo thwarted by 'such sharp attacks on tho Lutheran Church as those made in the Encyclical.]
