PETONE BOROUGH

THE GASWORKS. Sevoral notices of motion, most of them relating to the borough gasworks, will bo moved at to-night's meeting of the Petono Borough Council. The Mayor (Mr, J. \V. M'Ewan) will move as follows: — (1) That -the necessary steps be taken to change tho name of Kelly's Lane to Te Puni Street. (2) That in fuluro .tho gasworks' fitter, when placing meters in position, shall connect same with internal fittings aiid satisfy himself that the whole of the work clone in connection therewith is perfectly sound, freo from leaks, and in accordance with the Lighting By-laws. It shall be his duty to present a written report upon the matter to the engineer. (3) That the motion relating to the payment of consumers' deposit of 10s. ho rescinded so far as slot meters are' concerned. (4) That the engineer lie instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of substituting three-inch gas mains in lieu of the existing corroded one inch, lj-inoh, lj-inch, and two-inch gas-pipes laid down in 1900, and that he authorise all inspection to be made of all old service pipes. (5) That the engineer report as to the most modern methods of lamp-light-iug with a view of dispensing with existing pilot lights. (G) That a special meeting of tho council bo called to consider tlio tenders for new gas-holder and generally the various recommendations of the engineer as outlined in his report. Councillor Piper lias given notice to move: That a committee of this council bo set up to inquire into the general management of the 'borough gasworks (office and works), sucli committee to have power to call for any books, papers, or returns, and if deemed necessary to emplov outside actuarial assistance, committee to report to the council, with recommendations, if _ any, calculated to effect improvement in present financial position. /
