BETTERMENT OF THE MAORIS
PREVALENCE OF DRINKING. •ADVICE BY HON. J. CARROLL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, June 11. Speaking at tho Nativo gathering at AVauhi, the Hon. J. Carroll referred to the prevalence of drinking amongst the Natives. He urged Mahuta to head a movement for its suppression. Loss of substance, and loss of lands,' too, were traceable to the evil. Natives drank not wisely but too well. He could not look with hopo for any improvement unless {.heir chiefs and most influential men took a lead. If the people took the pledge' they would strengthen themselves and raise themselves to an altitude that would command respect. Whatever policy the Government, endeavoured to bring into play would meet with poor results if those associated with tho furtherance of such principles were unfitted for their work through their intemperance. All schemes propounded were doubtful of ultimate consummation if their intelligence became vitiated and their social condition debased. Mahuta Agreed, in tho presence or the people, to act as tho Minister advised, and put it to the people, who gave utterance to a unanimous chorus of approval.
