THE TURF.

PRINCE FOOTE'S PRICE. By Teleßraob—l'rcas Association— Copyrtsht Melbourno, June 11. A cablegram was received from Argentina asking that a price be put on Prince Foote, : -winnar »f tho Melbourne Cup (£5335), Victorian Derby (£1897), A.J.C. Derby (£2582), and Sires' Produce Stakes (£1112). The owner (Mr. "J. Baron") who is not desirous of selling, replied: "Oho hundred thousand pounds." NOTES AND COMMENTS: LBi GLEiS'coi!.] Tho Hawko's Bay Jockey Club's Winter meeting takes place on Wednesday and Thursday. Two previous winners of the NewZealand Cup aro nominated for this year's race, viz., Frisco and Lady Lucy. C. Pritchard has no member of his team engaged at tho Hawko's Bay Jockey Club's meeting, but if the weights suit Hydrant will bo sent up to compete in the hurdle events at Napier Park next week. At Opaki, Riflemaid is tho only member of M. M'Grath's team in work. The aged mare has been entered for tho Now Zealand Cup. Osiris, another member of M'Grath's team, is also entered. It is understood that Artillen'e, and possibly Lord- Kelvin, will go to Sydney in July, along with Iranui and Gold Lace. Erl King, who was racing over hurdles at-tho Hawko's Bay meetings early this season, and who was later leased to a West Coast owner, is among tho horses entered for sprint events at tho Ashburton Winter meeting, which opens on June 2,' i. Mr. J. Montgomery has sold his well-known pacer, Fairfield 111, to Mr. G. Loich, of Clareville. Needlework, who. ran prominently in the Grand National Steeplechase three years ago, is credited with doing good "work in view of engagements at Hawko's Bay and Napier One would imagine, however, that Neodlc-w-ork is too old to be on the improve. . Outlandor is .entered for both hack hurdle races and both open hurdle races at the Ashburton meeting. Truo Knight, one of tho Now Zealand Cup candidates, is tho : colt by Sir Laddo from Purity, purchased by Sir Geo. Clifford from the Manawatu Stud Co. Longner is said to have made considerable improvement since he. raced at Trentham in April, and should run well when next he is started. Mr. P. A. Elworthy's useful 'chaser, Liberty, won tho Heavy-Weight Steeplechase (13st.) at the South Can-, terbury Hunt Club's Point to Point meeting at Timaru on Thursday. Eurus, who has gone to Hastings to compete in the Hawko's Bay Steeplechase, had a penchant for running off at his fences last season, and he will have to run at least one good race before backers will be likely to support him. to any extent: Count Witte, tho half-brother to Solution that was unbeaten as a two-year-old, may bo seen on tho racing track again, as he has been entered for tho principal events at the Ashburton County Racing Club's meeting. Crucinolla is perhaps the most notable absentee from . tho list of nominations for tho New Zealand Cup; The fact that she has not been entered 'probably means that all going well in tho meantime she will visit Sydney in tho spring..Prospector,''who will, make his first appearance over, big country at tho Hawko's Bay meeting, will bo ridden by his trainer, C. .O'Neill. Jackpot and Lovell were credited with receiving a "gruelling" in tho Wanganui Steeplechase, and Audax was very distressed after his race in tho Great Northern.; Steeples, where Lovell had a second hard race. These three horses have all been accepted for in tho Hawke's Bay Steeples, and if they start it will bo interesting to sco what tho actual effect of those races has been. At present there is some diversity of opinion on the question.

In connection with Mr. J. Wren's big race for trotters and pacers, to take placo on Richmond Racecourse, Melbourne, next November, owners are reminded that entries close on June 15, and entries posted in New Zealand on or before that date will be accepted. Nominations are to be sent to Mr. A. J. Gray, secretary, 197 Bourko Street, Melbourne. FIXTURES. Jnna 15 and Ift—Hawke's Bay J.C. Winter. June 22 and 23—Napier Park E.C. Winter. June 23 and 2i—Ashburton County U.C. Winter.
