Not many ratepayers were present at the meeting held in the St. Augustine's Hall, P'etohe, last night, it was called by 'the Hutt Valley Tramway Board for the purpose of discussing the £85,000 loan required to instal an up-to-date tramway service in the Valley. Mr. M'Ewnii, chairman of the board, explained that three years ago the board had been appointed to arrive at some scheme. It was, he said, a mistake for boroughs to deal with smail schemes, and he instanced a few cases. The board had made provision for obtaining the money from an outside market, at a rato of 4J- per cent, it might be possible to borrow from the Government, but it was best to face the question from the -former point of view." It was proposed, continued Mr. M'E'wah, to lay a track from. Petone Railway Station to the Hult Park over thenew bridge on the eastern side of Petone from Jackson Street, via Cuba Street and Alice-town to Park Avenue at Hutt; from Feist's corner to White's Line, and thence' to Hutt Park, passing Bellcvue Gardens; from Petone station io Hutt station, via Hutt Road, thence to junction .of main trunk at Railway Hotel; from Junction and Waterloo Roads to Wnitako Street. It was estimated that the, receipts -would amount to £14,200 and the -expenditure to, £13,420, thus leaving• a profit of £770. Mr. M'Ewan held that. the. time was ripe for a service .irt.tho Valley, and to the board's mind would bo successful. If the ratepayers rejected the loan proposal the board were quite prepared to\ abide by their ■-wish. In conclusion, Mr. M'Ewan .thanked those present for their attendance.
