MIRAMAR BOROUGH COUNCIL.
TRAMWAY MATTERS. A meeting of the MiramaT Borough Council, held last evening, was attended by Mr. John Brodie (Mayor), and Councillors M'Clelland, M'Leod, Muir, 8011, and Bowie. The city tramways engineer wrote that the request of the Borough. Council that a tramway shelter-shed for passengers should he erected near the city boundary would he considered by the Tramways Committee of the City Council. The tramways engineer reported that, in accordance with the council's request, arrangements had been made for the running of an extra car to Seatoun, leaving Lambton Station on week days at ti:i p.m. Complaint having been niado by the city triiinwavs engineer that trees were overhanging "the electric light wires in lnglis Street, Seatoun, and rubbing tho insulation olf, the council ordered that the branches should be pruned immediately. In reply to representations tho 7.26 a.m. car from Jliramar should leave the terminus oirlicr, the city tramways engineer recommended that n special car should be put on, leaving Miramar at 7.16 a.m. It was not possible, he wrote, to interfere with the running of the 7.1!6 car. The matter was referred to tho Borough Tramways Committee. It was agreed, on Hie motion of Councillor Bowie;—"That it ho a recommendation to the Water and Drainage Commit-, tec (I) to obtain a report on the.advisability and cost of producing only electric power at the proposed ■ pumpingstation, and (2) to consider the rneriFs of flie l)ie;el or oilier engine its compared with suction gas plant, as fnr as running without constant attention is concerned." Ilexes. Ors and T. Potter complained of lack of proper footpaths in Mantell Street, averting that tradesmen refused to do business with residents because of the bad state of the approaches. The council authorised a reply to the effect that the evident need for improvement would be considered when Hie year's estimates were being framed. Mr. Max Kreissig wrote regarding the unsatisfactory state of the steps in Beerehaven Street, a matter upon which the council ordered that the borough engineer should report. The council agreed to full in with the proposal of the City Council that a reception should Ire nrranged lor flic new Governor, Lord Islington. The Street Construction Committee reported that the proposals of the Tramway Junction Land Company had been considered, and it had l>ccn resolved h> approach the company with a view to planting a strip, 12ft. wide, in the centre o!' the streets proposed to be constructed. The secretary of the company had been asked to instruct the company's engineers, Messrs. Seaton and Sladden, to confer with the borough engineer regarding tree-planting. The borough engineer, reporting ton works carried out during the four weeks ended June i, stated that bad weather had delayed the work on the Seatoun Heights. The formation work on the Scatfl'.ni Heights was near completion, and tin , construction of steps on Jiroadway would bo completed during the coming fortnight. The steps at lieerehavon had been put in order, and the hw-plonting work carried out included the clearing of trees planted last.year. Strong objection was being made by property owners against the thinning of trees on Ludlain Street—a necessary work. The cleaning of the drains had been commenced, a start having been made at the tunnel on Miramar Avenue. It was resolved to leave tho insurance of borough workmen with the company at present issuing tho policies. Tim Bank of New Zealand wrote that Hi overdraft of .£I2OO would bo granted. A financial statement was presented, showing that there was a debit balance Ui the borough bank account of ,£G3I Js". Accounts amounting to .£1321 were passed for payment, the principal item being line of £W?2 17s. 9d. for interest (street improvement, loan .£517 10s., tramway loan .£517 10s., and sanitation loan ,£l7 17s. M,).
Councillor Muir gave notice of motion its follows:—That the fare on the Seatoun line be lid., and on the. Xfiramnr North line 2d., with coupons for residents, 2t }ur Is., available over both linos, and that a considerable, reduction in the riinliinß of cars come into operation at tho beginning of July, as may be agreed upon by the council.
