PALMERSTON NEWS.
HOSPITAL REPORT. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.l Palmerston North, Juno 9. In connection with the proposal to build a municipal theatre at Daunevirke, the Mayor of Dial town, while on a visit to Palmerstoii to-day, obtained much useful information from Mr. H. Muller, manager of the Opera House here. Mr. Ransom also obtained information as to the cost of the band rotunda in the Square, so that it is evident the Mayor of Dannevirkc intends to go in for improvements for the town he presides over. The practical examinations of Lieut.Colonels Pringle and Cameron and Major Mcldruiii have been conducted here by Liout.-Colonel Bnnchop. The result will not be known until utter the theory .examinations, which these officers have yet
to undergo. in the annual report presented to the Manawatii Hospital and Charitable Aid Hoard to-day by J)r. .Martin, it was stated that the medical and surgical cases for the year presented no unusual features, though the period had been an extremely busy oire. Feeling reference was made to the late Dr. Maclntire, who had been on the stall' since- the.inception of the hospital, and had done yeoman, service in its interests. Reference was made to the valuable services of the matron, Miss JiacLaggun, and the deputy-matron, Sister Greig, and to the great sense of duty shown by the sisters and nurses in their arduous duties in the wards. The nursing staff of this hospital in efficiency is second to none in the Dominion, adds the report.' The junior nurses during the year have shown a commendable industry over the lectures and instruction given by the medical and senior nursing staff. It is added that the surgical work tliinn.'? the year had been extensive. Operations had been performed under general and locai anaesthesia, a large number of the cases being of a major type. The surgical record of tho hospital was a good one, but it was pointed out. that many of the most serious surgical cases were those of suppurating and gangrenous appendicitis. Those cases should be submitted to the surgeons early. They could not 1)0 submitted too early, and it should be impressed upon tho public that appendicitis is one of the most treacherous of maladies. Nineteen cases of infectious diseases had been treated during tha year, which was a very small proportion in comparison v/ith the population, and there had been no death from diphtheria since the diphtheria ward was erected somo years ago. thus illustrating the value of prompt isolation and the early administration of antitoxin. Consideration should be given by' racing clubs on account of the class of accidents which come from that sport, and attention was directed to the fact that old people behveen 75 years and 00 years of age have been sent 'to the hospital in a dying state, and more charity would bo shown by keeping them at their own homes..
