M'Kenzie has returned to tho chargo in regard to his scheme to extend the Sandon-Foxton steam tram to Bulls, and was successful in getting the motion carried by the Manawatu County Council in favour- of a petition being presented to Parliament asking either that the extension bo carried out by the State, or that the council itself should bo allowed to undertake it. In the course of the discission, the chairman (Councillor G. Wilson) pointed out that; during the time that the late Mr. J. C. Macandrew was Minister for Public Works, Parliament had authorised the construction of a branch line from Greatford to Bulls, and surveys of the route had actually been made, so that there should bo no obstacle in tho way of the Government taking on tho work if necessary funds were forthcoming. Apostles of the "simple life" gained an overwhelming victory at the Literary and Debating Society's meeting on Tuesday night, when Miss Mason, in a thoughtful- and carefully-prepared speech, contended "that savage races are happier than civilised races." She was ably seconded by Miss Silvester. The opposition leader was Miss Moody Bell," whose chief supporter was Mr.,. E. J. Judd. The "savages" were represented by , Mrs. White, Messrs. Gibb, Galland, Gunning, Hensinaii, and Clayton amongst other speakers, while the motion was also opposed by Messrs. Exall and Gundy. At times the gathering resembled a korero, especially when Mrs. Clayton was describing in detail the horrors of civilisation. The motion was eventually carried by 3G votes to G. GREYTOWN. The monthly meeting of the South Wairarapa Hospital Trustees was held on Wednesday when, there were present Mr. W. Udy (in the chair), and Messrs. W. J. Nix, and M. Maston. The Treasury forwarded a cheque for £229 7s. 5d., being subsidy on funds received. Accounts amounting to Ml 17s. 9d. were passed for payment. The number of patients now in the hospital was reported as 10. .
