MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our 'Special Correspondent.) Masterton, June 8. A large number of wool-classing student* attended at Mr. J. F. Heckler's wool-shed, Mangamahoe on Tuesday, when a practical demonstration was' given with Lincolns, Leicesters, Liucoln-Konincy cross, and Sbrnpshires. -Mr. S. Wood, the instructor, gave some valuable hints concerning the points attached to the various breeds,'and Jlr. Heckler made some interesting remarks on the Shropshire Ifrecd ns a fat-lamb producer. Mr. J. C. Boddington, who has been connected with the-Masterton Hospital for tlu. past thirty years—eighteen years as Chairman of Trustees and the remainder ns secretary—was yesterday presented with a handsome testimonial and purse of sovereigns upon the occasion of his retirement. The presentation was made by liis Worship the .Mayor (Mr. .1. 11. Coradine, who referred to the circumstances which had necessitated the retirement of Mr. Boddington and the many services rendered by that gentleman to the hospital. Messrs. M. Caselborg and .1. B. Keith also spoke of the good work done by the liito secretary. In acknowledging, the gift, Mr. Boddington stated that he had been deprived of the position of secrotary through no fault of his own, and against the wishes of the old committee. He had naturally felt very considerably hurt at. having to retire from a position which he had ■ held for so long a time. At '■ a . meeting .of the Masterton Fire Police last evening, an address was presented to Lieutenant Attwood, who is about to leave the district. The presentation was made in an appropriate speech by Sergeant-Major M'Crystall. During the evening Captain Dixon was also presented with a two-years' service bar. It was decided to have at least four nieii stationed in the Town Hall on the occasions of the picture, exhibitions, i -At the weekly meeting of the Congregational Church Literary Institute a commencement was made with the study of Tennyson's "Princess," and the Rev. A. Hodgo (president) read a short paper giving an interesting sketch of Tennyson's life. The swede-growing competition in connection with tlie Miisterton A. and P. Association is now being judged by Messrs. T. P. Lett and A. J. Percy. The Masterton Homing Pigeon Club will re-fly their birds for the Ladies' Bracelet from Kaitoke to-morrow. A previous attempt to get off the - competition failed on account of a mistake in the time for the liberation of the birds.No fewer than five hockey matches are to .be played on the grounds at Lansdowne to-morrow. Hockey appears to have gained as strong a hold on the young people of this district as football had a few years back. Mr. John Hessey • returned to-day from a visit to Dunedin and the West Coast, where ho has been engaged on dredging business.' He states that everything is progressing satisfactorily in connection with the Success dredge. The dredge, which will be installed with '10-horse-power, will bo ready for work in the course of a few months, and will be capable of dealing'with 12,000 tons per week.
