[By Glencoh.l The Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting will be concluded at Ellersiie today, when tho Winter Steeples and the York Welter Handicap are the principal events to bo decided. Kiatcro has now taken part in five contests for tho Great Northern Steeplechase. - . Grand Slam, who won tho concluding event at. the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday last, was long overdue for a win. Previous to Saturday's victory, lie had not won a race s-iaieo April, 1907, when lie beat Volume in tho Autumn Handicap at tho Manawatu meeting. Gravitation, who has boon in tho South Island since last, season, will, it is understood, be rent to Wanganni to do stud duty there tins season. , Lovell has lightened up with his recent travelling and racing, and on that account he may not be sent to Hastings to compete in tho steeplechase events at the Hawke's Bay Jockey, Club's meeting. but may instead bo .given a short spell. His next; appearance would then bo at the Trenthani winter meeting. Penates and Crucinella have been entered for the Epsom and 'Metropolitan Handicaps at ■ tho Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting. The field in tho Tainaki Steeplechase at Ellersiie to-day is not by any means a select one, if old C'avaliero bo excepted. Cavaliero ran. second to Red M'Gregor over the Ellersiie course at the autumn meeting, and later ran third to First Barrel in the Steeplechase at Avondale. Dawn overreached when working at Ellersiie last week, , hence, his withdrawal from tho Cornwall Handicap on Friday. As ho figures among the acceptors for the York Welter to-day, his injury was apparently but a slight o.ne. ,

ICopu looked well at Levin last Friday, and had th? going been firm he might have taken a more prominent hand in tho settlement of the K-aukawa Cup. Before long now he should have his naiuo entered on the winning lisl. .

WooLloomooloo, one of the candidates for the Campbell Hurdles at Ellersiie to-day, has. lwen placed second in his last threo starts.

Lc Beau, /Who. is encaged in the Winter Steeplechase at Ellcrslic to-day, won that event last year, defeating Capitol and Sol.

It is reported (hut the Gisborno sportsman, Mr. P. Hall, will have Iranui and 'Gold Lace carrying his colours in Australia this spring. Both have been good winners in New Zealand during the present season.

.Ngapuka, ..ho is engaged in the York Welter at Ellerslifc to-day with lOst. 21b., Veil'this *vetit ; 'hist year with list.' in the saddle. He is'very well at the present time; and was certainly unfortunate to meet Master Soult in the Cornwall Handicap on Friday last. ;In heavy going Ngapuka is in his element, and .his trainer regards him as one'of the best welter horses in the Dominion.

Prophet, who finished third to Wimmera in the Great Northern Hurdles on Friday last, is among the candidates for ("lie Campbell Hurdles at Ellerslie to-day, and his meeting with Woulloomooloo will be very interesting. Prophet Ims had a big repiitntion fol- some time past, and although lie will not he meeting Wimmcra again to-duy. the opposition will be sufficiently strong to thoroughly test him. FIXTURES.
