OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS. PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATE' EXAMINATIONS. Tho first examination for members of the Officers' Training Corps desirous of qualifying for certificates of proficiency, Class A, will be held about June 13 or 11 next. From the local units of tho corps, tho Victoria College Company, about JO j candidates have entered. As this is. the first examination of the kind, a reference to the general conditions under which tho certificates are issued will no doubt be of interest. Two certificates, designated A and B, are provided for by regulation. The examination of candidates is conducted by tho Military Committee of the University College or High School to which the corps. is attached. . The supervising officer is appointed by the Director of Military Education (Lieut.-Colonel E. W. C. Chaytor). A cadet of the junior division is not eligible for examination for Certificate A (the lower certificate of the two) till he has completed a tviiuimum of two years' efficient service, but a university cadet wl)o joins the senior division without having previously obtained Certificate A may present himself for examination in the syllabus of that certificate upon completing one year's service in the senior division, provided that lie has attended not less than 30 instructional parades (*lO if he is a recruit). But the certificate will not be granted till two years' service has been completed. 11l ! order to bo eligible.to undergo the examination for Certificate B, a cadet must be in possession of Certificate A, and have completed a minimum of two years' ■ service in the senior division. A cadet | who wishes to accept a commission as an officer of the Defence Force immediately after obtaining Certificate B will be allowed to undergo the examination for that certificate after, one year's "efficient" service in the senior division, provided ho has in that year; undergone the training laid down, and has previously obtained Certificate A jn the junior division.. ' A
The following advantages are conferred on. cadets of the Officers' Corps who, aftdr obtaining one or both certificates, accept commissions in the reserve ur defence forces:—^
(i) Should he take a commission in the reserve of officers' active list—exemption from examination 1 as lieutenant. •
(ii) Should he take a commission in the defence force—exemption from the tvliole or part of the examination for promotion to the rank of lieutenant. '
(iii) Should he become a teacher under the education system of the Dominion—entitled to receive , certificate of qualification in military drill.
