UNEMPLOYMENT.

COMPULSORY INSURANCE URGED. CHURCH, DEPUTATION. LABOUR PRIME MINISTER'S REPLY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Roc. Juno 7, !).2u p.m.) Melbourne, June 7. A deputation representing thu Anglican body, headed by the Archbishop of Melbourne (Dr. Lowther Clarke), waited 011 tho Prime Minister, Mr% Fisher, with respect to unemployment. Several speakers urged, compulsory .insurance, the employer 'to contribute one-third, the employee 0110-third, and the Government onc-thinl. Mr. Fisher, in reply, snid that compulsory insuranco was a big step. It meant that everj- worker, if he worked only a portion of his time, should for that time receive a living vase. Economically, that was what he wanted to seo carried into effect. Economically, there was no difficulty in the matter. Tho people were here and tho wealth was here. The solution was the legislative difficulty. The problem would be tackled cheerfully, but he very much doubted whether tile deputation's proposals would solve the difficulty. The solution would not be difficult financially. The Government would, provide work. He did not desire to act in a spirit vindictive to any part of tho community, but their own people had their first claim.

The Government, Mr. Fisher added, .lacked data on the proposals, and when taking the census would acquiro the needed information.

At the Lambeth Conference of Bishops, representing the whole Anglican Communion, the following resolutions were carried•

That the social mission" and social principles of Christianity should bo given a more prominent place in the study and teaching of the Church, both for the clergy and laity.

That a committee or organisation for social service should be part of the equipment of every diocese, and, as far as practicable, of every parish.
