AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
THE NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. WOODGER'S 220 YAKDS RECORD PASSED. A meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last evening, Sir. A. Marryatt presiding. There were also present: Messrs. J. H. Pollock, J. F. Thompson, C. E. Bridge, W. Larkin, E. L. Chaffey, It. H. Qram, Davies, and W. G. Talbot, secretary. Mr. Oram was welcomed as the delegate of the Canterbury Centre. The Otago Centre wrote asking how the revision of the rules was progressing. Tho chairman said he did not know if (lie rules could bo printed this year, but the matter was well under way', and an advance copy would be forwarded to associations as soon as possible. Tho New Zealand League of Wheelmen wrote asking that the council and the league should recognise each other's disqualifications, and consult before removing any disqualification affecting an apiateur. It was decided to take no action until a copy of the league's rules was received.
It was decided that, all the necessary conditions having been complied with, the record of W. A. Woodger of 22 2-ssec; for the 220 yds. at the Wellington Provincial Championship Meeting on.Febru-. ary 5 be passed, and a certificate granted. The Australasian Union wrote stating that tho cases of Gordon, Richmond, and Errol M. Mackersoy had been considered, and reinstatements granted iu accordance with the recommendations of the -New Zealand Association.
An application was made by the Auckland Centre for recognition of the walking record of D. Wilson, 20min. sSsec., in the three-mile walk championship at Auckland, on February 20. All the necessary certificates, etc., were enclosed. The chairman raised the question of whether or not there was-a time-limit within whiolr applications for the recognition of records must bo made. The motion covering this matter was not at. hand, and consequently the application was held over until next meeting, the secretary and chairman to look into the matter of time-limit, and report. • The question of where the Australasian championships of 1011-12 are to be held was left over for the consideration of the next council, as the dale of the meeting is too far in advance to enablo tho present, council to fix it. It was decided to advise Otago to this effect. It was resolved that the question of the allocation of the next New Zealand championships be referred to the annual meeting of delegates. The matter of the rearrangement of the boundaries of. the various, centres has been under discussion for some time, and a sub-committee has reported on the matter. It was moved by Mr. J. 11. Pollock that Marlborough, Nelson, and the West Const bo attached to the Canterbury Centre, instead of the Wellington Centre, as at present; also, that the Hawke's Bay, Egmont, and Taranaki clubs be at present attached to no centre. Under this rule,'members of Hawke's Bay and Taranaki clubs would bo able to compete only individually at Now Zealand championships. They would be able to compete for medals, etc., but could not score points for any centre. This proposal was opposed byfseveral members, and Mr. E. ■L. Chaffey moved an amendment that in the meantime Hawke's Bay and Taranaki bo left in the Wellington Centre, while Nelson, Marlborough, and Westlaud go to Canterbury. The amendment was carried, as a recommendation to tho sub-committee which is engaged in tho revision of the rules.
A recommendation from the conference of centres was that the maximum prize for Marathon races be raised from ten guineas to twenty guineas. It was pointed out that the New Zealand delegates had proposed this at the recent Australasian Conference at Brisbane, but that it had had practically no support. It was, thorofore, decided to go no further in the matter.
It was decided to add a hop, step, and jump contest to the present New Zealand championship programme. A standard has yet to be fixed, 45 feet being suggested. •
It was decided to circularise the different centres, urging them to form new clubs, and otherwise to extend tho sport in their districts.
The Australasian Union asked for tho council's vote on two questions:—(l) Whether the union had decided rightly in ruling that a member of tho New South Wales Rugby League (Northern Union), who is also a member of tho N.S.W. A.A.A., had not infringed his amateur status by his connection with the league, it being stntcd that whilst playing footbiill the applicant had received no remuneration. (2) Ts there anything to prevent a State association becoming affiliated to an amalgamation or federation of amateur bodies, and obeying its decision as to the professional status of au athlete, provided in all cases that it is stricter in effect thnn the existing amateur definition of the union? There waE considerable discussion on, tho question. The association's voles lire as followed) Yes; (2) No.
Mr. Davies moved an amendment to tho racing rules-.—"That any competitor who lias, in tho opinion of' the referee, given up ,1 raco shall not continue on the track." The matter will be referred to the Australasian Union with a view to having a mail voto taken.
