Tha Maoris lost their first match in New South "Wales by 11 points to nil. The teams were: Maoris—Full-back: H. .Martin; threequarters: Kylauds, M. Winiata, Dansey; five-eighths: Stead and Kaipara; hatfbaoks: l'oariga and Tukarangi; forwards: Tipene, Tamu, \V. Winiata, Sellara, Cunningham, Hall, Small.

The weather was fine, but bitterly cold. The attendance was about ten thousand. Tho home team won the toss, aud thereby gained the advantage. The first spell was marked by even play. The New, South Welshmen frequently invaded the Maoris' territory, but the visitors, though they could not make much headway against their opponents', managed to put up a strong defence, Winiata, Takarangi, Martin, Kaipara, and Dansey being most prominent. The combination of the New South Welshmen was superior, and they displayed fine tackling powers. Shortly before the end of the first half Sellars (Maori forward) had to retire with a broken rib. Immediately afterwards the first score appeared; from a fine run by Campbell, Row secured a try, tho spoil ending: New South Wales 8, Maoris nil. In the second half H. Martin took Sellars's place. Though tho visitors had tho wind at their backs, they failed to hold their own, the New South Welshmen's superior condition and combina--tion telling. The Maoris were kept 6triot!y on the defensive, and perceptibly tired.' Towards the close Widmer added a couple of tries for the home team. Row converting the last one, making the score 11 to nil. i The visitors showed an inclination to hang on to the ball too long, and there were evidences that they had not yet had time to develop their true form.
