» RESENTED IN GERMANY. By Telecranli—l'reas Association—Oonrrleht (Eec. June 6, 10 p.m.) Berlin, Juuo C. A Papal Encyclical on the tercentenary of Borromeo contains a severe denunciation of reformers and their influence on modern times. This has led to vehement protests in Germany. Interpellations have been given notice of in the Prussian-Diet, and an Evangelical mass meeting of protest will be held in Berlin on June 12.
[Carlo Borromeo was bont at Arona, on Lago Maggiore, Italy, in 1538, and died at Milan in 1584. He was an Italian Cardinal and Archbishop of Milan, and 'was noted as an ecclesiastical reformer and philanthropist. Ho was canonised in 1010. In /the year 1576 Milan was visited by a plague, which swept away great numbers. He went about giving directions for the accommodation of the sick and burying the dead, avoiding up danger and sparing no expense. His continual labours and austerities appear to have shortened his life.]
