THE NEW GOVERNOR.
PLANS FOR RECEPTION. Arrangements for the reception, of the new Governor (Lord Islington) on his arrival on June 22 were referred to by the Mayor (Mr. T. 11.. AVilford, M.P.) a't the meetiug of the City Council yesterday. Mr. Wilford said ho understood that the Government proposed to give his Excellency a reception in front of the old Parliamentary Buildings. His own first idea had been that the City Council should give.him a reception in the Town Hall in the evening, but as it would be necessary for .the whole of the City Council, and probably the friendly societies and other public bodies, to meet the' Governor on his arrival in the city, and for him, as Mayor, to say a few words of welcome then, it appeared to him that a third ceremony in the Town Hall would make too many. He suggested, therefore, that the council should welcome the Governor at the Queen's Statue, and afterwards attend the Government's reception, and they might offer the Prime Minister the use of the Town Hall for > the Government's function if they should prefer holding it there to holding it outside the old Parliamentary Buildings. Tho Mayor's suggestion that ■_ there should be no" municipal reception in the evening was endorsed by councillors. At yesterday's meeting of the Council of tho Chamber of Commerce, it was decided to co-operate with the City Council in entertaining the new Governor, Lord Islington. .... " Mr. "Justice 1 Cooper arrived in town from Palmerstoa North last night. He will swear in the Chief Justice (Sir Eobert Stout) as Deputy-Governo! this morning. '
