QUEENSLAND-LAND TENURE.
ONE PERPETUAL LEASE. Some two years ago the, Queensland Government inserted in the Land Bill provision for perpetual lease. Much, says the Sydney "Herald," has been heard of its success in New Zealand. Tho system has been tried in the northern State in conjunction with tho ordinary forms of land selection, but selectors invariably fight shy of it. In connection with over 900 applications for some land in the Burnett district recently only two or three applications for perpetual leases - were lodged. One of th© applicants was successful, and he makes the first selector of a perpetual lease in Queensland. Tinder the Act there is power to tho Minister to give priority to perpetual lease selectors, but no such preference has been given. The fact that this power existed is said to have led to a largo number of inquiries at tho Department, and it is believed that is really responsible for the.applications lodged the other day, the selectors thinking that by applying under these conditions they would prevail '"at the ballot over ordinary selectors.
