N FIRST DAY. WIMMERA WINS THE HURDLES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, June 3. The Auckland Racing Club inaugurated its Great Northern Steeplechase Meeting at Ellerslio to-day. The attendance was very large and well up to the average of previous years. Tho weather was cold, but bracing and.fine, and' the course was in excellent order. On the totalisators business was brisk, the sum of £14,713 being ■ invested, compared with £13,085 on the corresponding day of last year. In addition 36' bookmakers were licensed, returning £728 in fees. The following are the results:— MAIDEN STEEPLECHASE, of 200 sovs. Two miles and a half. Mr. F. Seccombe's First Barrel, by Musketry—Minna, lOst. 101b. (Cowan) 1 Mr. J. Twohill's Arty, 9st. 91b. (Deeble) 2 Mr. A. S. Selby's Mozart, lOst. 51b.' First Barrel never gave his opponents a chance, eventually winning easily by six lengths from Arty, who beat Mozart by two lengths for second honours. As the'field went along, the back of the course the last time round Wimmera showed out clear of Prophet, Wooloomooloo running up third, with Tui Cakobau at the head of tho others, which wero hopelessly beaten. Crossing the top stretch the position of the leaders was unchanged, but at the turn for home Prophet tired of the struggle, Wooloomooloo displacing him as Wimmera's nearest attendant. At the last fence Wimmera was striding along freely, and, getting over the obstacle in safety, easily held his own in the concluding stages, and won comfortably by two and a half lengths from Wooloomooloo. Eight lengths away camo Prophet, with Tui Cakobau and Paritutu close up. Then followed Armagh, the last pair being Aorangi and Waitapu. Time, 4min. 52sec.—a record for the race.
