AMERICAN RAILWAYS.
ANTI-TRUST LAW. HIGHER WAGES AND FREIGHTS. By TelcEraph—Presa Association—Oopyrich' ' (Rec. June 3, 11.10 p.m.) London, June 3. The- Washington correspondent of "The Times" comments on the action of tho United States Government in obtaining an injunction restraining twenty-live railways belonging to tho Western Traflic Association from increasing freights, on the ground that an advance without competition violates tho Sherman anti-trust law. Referring to the scope of this move, the correspondent says it strikes not only against advantage rights, but against tho whole system of railway committees and associations. It seems to indicate the initiation of law suits similar to those against the Northern Securities Company and the Harriman "Merger.". Tho Washington correspondent of tho "Morning Post" reports that the railway companies threaten that until the Courts docido whether tho rates of freight may be increased, new construction will bo suspended, throwing thousands out of employment. The managers of the railways state that the high cost of labour and the increased price of coal and oil necessitate higher rates.
[A number of United States railway companies recently granted wage-increases averaging G per cent. No secret was madg of the intention to call oil the consumer to pay for it.l'
