HOCKEY.

(By "Bulvt-off.'T Karori have jumped from second placo to tho load, whilst College have dropped behind into Karor.i's position. It must be mentioned, however, that College have hud a bye, whereas Karori havo not. The only other altemtioa in position?, has occurred with Wellington, they having moved from sixth to fourth position.' . ■ The actual order now reads as follows:—Karori 8 points, Victoria College 7, United 5, Wellington 1, Wesley, Y.M.C.A., and Metropolitan 2. The match United v. College, at Day's Bay to-day, should prove interesting, for tho reason that if the former win, they aud College will he ou equal terms. Karori and Y.M.C.A. put up a sturdy light at "Day's bay last Saturday, tho only goal scored being obtained within about 15 minutes before the call of tiino. Chances appeared bright for Y.M.C.A. in tho first spell but, in the second half, Karori proved superior and, but for tha loss of two players, would havo increased the score materially. As it was, however, the referee was, owing to delays, obliged' to allow play to continue long after the players were unrecognisable. Tho Karori team were undoubtedly unfortuuato in losing two of their players. The most sc-rious accident befell Gendall, right full-back, whoso tail on his wrist resulted in it being broken. Gendall has been playing exceedingly well of late, and, from indications, ho would havo before long caught the representative selector's eye. It is worth mentioning that Gendall displayed great interest in the game after the accident. Hammond sustained a severe blow on tho knee, which, as mentioned, necessitated Karori lighting out tho last stages of tho match with only nine men.' It.is stated by a member of the Management Committee that the first goal secured by Murphy should havo been allowed. Dr. Morpeth, tho referee, however, ruled against, the. player, and tho ruling on a question of fact is paramount. Murphy's second goal—the one allowed —was a sudden assault, and, generally speaking, this player played a fino game on Saturday last. Most of tho Karori side played well up to form, so also did tho Y.M.C.A. team, especially tho bnclis. Loader was tho most prominent among tho Y.M.C.A. forward line, and he got in a few very tricky runs. > Tho Karori forwards in the second spell proved too solid for their opposing frontrankers. Wheatley was playing again, and ho and Cardo did very fair work, so also did Parton. Haase is improving wonderfully. Godfrey • Davies and Putnani wero over on the alert. One word of kindly criticism regarding tho piny of Carde and H. Parton may not he out of place, however. The former, when dribbling, frequently loses the ball through putting the leather too far ahead, out of his reach, whilst Parton is apt to take flying shots. "What has happened that United only drew with Metropolitan? This, of courso, was the great last week. The Reds' proverbial good fortune seems to havo turned; or else they have met a team as good as themselves. If Metropolitan go on improving at tho present rate their position apparently will be very satisfactory at tho ond of the season. At the end of the first spell Metropolitan were leading by two goals to one. The Heds, however, livened up during the second spell. Wellington have taken some of the teams by surprise . entirely, especially so when playing against Wesley lost week. The margin of victory was small, there being a clear run right through tho first spell. Dunn for the winners was the goal-getter. From present indications Wellington should be among the leading teams at the close of the season. It is worthy of note that three of Wellington's men were chosen for the representative match at Palmerston yesterday. No other club provided more than two players. Mr. H. V. Walton has worked hard to make the trip satisfactory and at time o£ writing a .victory for 'the Wellington team seems to be a fair anticipation. Private advice received from one of the Hawke's Bay representative players states that tho team which meets Wellington to play for the shield on Juno'2s may not bo too strong. Another Napier writer states, however, that Hawko's Bay anticipates having u great chance of taking tho shield." Tho same writer states that HastiiißS-tho crack team-which played a«ainst Napier on Saturday week last, gave a fino showing, tho game finishing without a score being effected. Tho Tlnwke's Bay referees aro enforcing tho rulo-regnrding "size of hockey sticks." Of tn-3 ieum.-i thnt tonic the Held Inst week in that district, only live sticks passed through the measuring ring. "Wellington will be expected to test the local team's sticks on Juno 25 also, tho same writer goes on to say. The Wolliiißton Management Committee will meet next week to arrange preliminary (Mails concerning future, shield matches. "liully-OIT" suggests that tickets 1,0 issued to the various clubs early, and each club should guarantee to sell, say, 100 tickets. Thnt would be a very feasible way of providing funds for tho local association. If tho day is fine, thero is every reason to expect a fairly large crowd at Day's Bay to witness the mnlcli. It should bo an exciting event. Tho Ferry Company will provide seating accommodation for close on a thousand spectators, and tlio whnlp question of success reals now with Iho clubs and management committee; tho former felling tho tickets, thus assuring a fair gathering of tlio public. No. 1 "round, Day's Hay, Was used for Iho first time this season on Kudu-day. It it stated thai satisfactory arrangements havn bci'ii made with 11ms Kerry Conipniiy i-egKi-diiiK tlio maintenance, ul' tho Day's Bay Grounds,
