CITY CLUB EVENTS. 1 ' (By Centre.) '.. After last Saturday's games even the wisest among us would not venture a guess as to tho ultimate destination of the l'rnnd Cup". The Capitol Club certainly lend in the matter of points, but their ranks have been consid»nbly weakened by the departure of Montgomery, the elder, to America, and King to Edinburgh (not Glasgow as previously intimated). ' • Forbes, another of tho Capitol men, is incapacitated thruugh an unfortunate acciden':, so altogether tho club is temporarily suffering from loVs of strength. . However Kelbiinio went. down to Columbia at Duppa Street last Saturday, and on the day's piny the better team undoubtedly won. They were faster in all their movements and cleaner in point of stick-work than tho Blues. Columbia scored enily in the gamo nftoi- some desultory play on both sides, whereupon tho Kclburnu defence pulled ilsalf Uigul her. At tho other cud tho Blues had been busy, but through faulty stick-work on the part of ?omc, nnd erratic shooting, they failed to ciiualiso the score until the second quarter. Then three goals came in quick succession, and at half-time the stare stood 1) to I, in iiirour of Kelburnc. On resuming after the usual spell, the fleet new of. the Columbia men soon upset tin; orisnnisntion of the Blues' defi'iiee, and.one :ifl?r auolher Mi* g'j.ils cninu until tho whistle went, when Columbia canio away with a well-
earned victory of G to A. The turning of the lublus ims as rapid as it was decisive. Casey must bo congratulated upon his generalship of the winning side, and O'Leary proved a tower of strength in dcfence. In tlio attacking division, Grant, M'Carthy, and I'ama were conspicuous throughout, the game, while Leydon, at centre, led the attack very creditably. IV the Blues, Neal, Jordan, and Louglihane plujtil wall, but Meyer spoilt any credit due to him for outwitting his opponents by erratic shooting. Webb, at centre, for Kelbtirne, should endeavour to secure tho ball from the scrummages instead of "batting" it. while Millar would easily make up tor his lack of stick-work by giving the ball to his homes without futile attempts at dodging. A little system is often more effective than ii gr»at amount of energy—which is a maxim any lacrnsscur can well adopt. At the Basin Itewve th» Capitol Club won from Wellington by 12 to 1, but in this match the defeated team was handicapped in not having its full complement of player?. The first half was decidedly against the Herts their opponents scoring sit goals mainly from combined play between Montgomery and Borrodaln. In'the third quarter a couple of goals were added to Capitol's tally, and still the Wellington score stood at one. In the ftnal quarter the Reds proved there is plenfv of "kick" loft in the old dogs yet. and from combined play added three gonls in nuick orcUr. For Canitol, Dee fin goal). King, and J. Raukin defendw! ably, whilst Montgomery and Borrodnlo were most prominent in" attack. Robinson, Ryder. Wix, and (Vver were undoubtedly tho best for.t.ho Reds. T.o-dnv the third matches in the local competition will (weather permitting) be played off. Capitol are set down- to mvk tho IMbiirne Club, but both teams will be in indifferent strength. Columbia are to meet Wellington at Duppa Street, and both clubs should, bo on hand to. stait punctually at'three o'clock shorn, as the light becomes very bad towards the call of time. The association has arranged for referees to be in attendance at both matches, and as four miarters of 20 minutes each must be played, the necessity of commencing punctually will readily' bo appreciated by all contestants. The writer has not yet learned the dnt< upon which the representative match tttween Auckland nnd Wellington is to take place. It will probably not be played until the third round of the local competition has concluded, the selection of the pjnvm nnd the preparatory trial matche-:—it is stated —cannot then upset tho progress of the Cnp matches to any great extent.
