NAPIER ITEMS.
(By Telegraph— Special Correspondent.) Napier, June 2. Speaking at this morning's meeting of the ■ Hawke's Bay • Agricultural and Pastoral Society, the president. (Mr. N. Kettle) remarked that the society had now the largest financial membership in New Zealand, the amount collected _in members' fec-s. for the past year being .£ll3l. Councillor Niven remarked at the Borough Council meeting last .evening that they could not get the engineer they wanted for. jGSOO a year, and lie suggested increasing the amount. The chairman (Councillor W. Plowman, in the absence of the Mayor, Mr. J. Vigor Brown, H.P.) said that notice of motion would be reciuired. Councillor Thompson said they were not bound to accept any of the applicants, and they could, if they thought necessary, call for fresh applications at a higher figure. No action, was taken in this matter. Draft conditions of engagement, of the engineer were approved with the exception that applicants need not necessarily be authorised surveyors!."
