A DEADLOCK.
CITY COUNCIL INCIDENT. A deadlock, which threatened to bs« come farcical, was encountertd by the City Council last night, in the election of two delegates to the Municipal- Association's conference. Councillors Luke, Davine, and Hindmarsh were nominated, and the Mayor asked councillors to vote bv each writing two names on a piece of paper. The result was that each of the three polled the same number of votes, and the Mayor declined to exercise a casting vote. It was then suggested that the vote _by ballot was irregular, and open voting was nest tried. Each candidate received six votes, and the result was hailed with laughter. The Mayor 6aid he had no power to make all the councillors vote, but he thought the candidates might drop their natural modesty for onco and help the. council out of an impasse. Another show of hands was then taken, and' resulted: Councillor Devine S, Councillor Hindmarsh 8, Councillor Luke G. Councillors Devine and Hindmarsh were declared elected.
