SAILORS' REST.

ANNUAL MEETING. Tho uniiunl meeting of contributors to tho Sailors' Rest, which was to have been held on Tuesday, afternoon, lapsed for want of a quorum. In the nineteenth annuo! report of the institution the commitfcco has expressed its regret that the donations still continued to show a falling-off, and whilst in 1908 they amounted to .£159 4s. Gd., in 1309 j;isi ss. Gd., the period under review only produced -Gl'-IG 12s. lOd. It was true that a number of new subscribers had assisted the funds, but on tho other hand some of those who for years past had been contributors had discontinued their subscriptions. The committee, therefore, earnestly requested contributors again to assist by continuing on tho list of subscribers, and also by bringing the needs of the institution prominently urider the notice of their friends with a view of receiving additional support. The superintendent, Captain Bonner, continued to do excellent work for the visiting seamen, and had regularly during the past twclvo months arranged tho popular weekly concerts for their entertainment. Friends were requested to forward any used journals or literature for the readingroom or for distribution amongst the sailors oil tho various vessels leaving this port. Tho report also expressed thanks to the donors of goods and the promoters of the weekly concerts. Messrs. A. V. Monro, D. Ryan, L. H. B. Wilson, and G. W.'lson having retired from tho committee, in terms of the constitution, the two first-named liavo offered themselves for re-election. Dr. Chappie and Mr. J. H. N. A. Barnes having retired during the last ■ twelve months, and Mr. E. Fletcher having taken his seat as chairman of the Harbour Board, three more vacancies were thus created—five in all. Captains Stott and M'Arthnr and Messrs. AVallis, Taylor, and J. Sm'vh have been nominated to fill the vacancies.
