NOXIOUS WEEDS.
DEPUTATION TO THE HON. T. .MACKENZIE, (By Telegraph—Press Association.)' , . : ' Duh'edin, June 2. ' Several deputations dealing with Southland matters were introduced to the Minister, of Agriculture this morning by Mr. G. J. Auderson, M.P. for Mutaura. The first was in reference to recent prosecutions of settlers for failing to clear, their properties of noxious weed*. It was stated that large landowners were allowed to escape prosecution, while small landowners were prosecuted year in and year' out. It was also pointed out that it was comparatively easy to treat weeds in open country, but' in fresh-ly-cleared bush country it was well nigh impossible to get weeds under control. It was also pointed out that the spread of weeds was due to a great extent from seeds coming from only partly-cleared Crown lands. Mi\ Mackenzie, in replying, fully dealt with the policy of the Department in connection with this question, and promised that representations made would receive careful consideration.
