CHURCH UNION.
PROGRESS IN SCOTLAND. By Tcleeruph-Fress Assoclatlon-CopyrlirnJ (Rec. June 2, 0.10 a.m.) London, June 1. The General Assemblies of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church have instructed the Joint Committee-on the union proposal to continue its deliberations, and to present a complete report to the next Assemblies. Great satisfaction was expressed at the fact that the committee had conferred during the year without coming to an impasse. The Rev.. Norman MacLeod (principal clerk of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland) and Lord Balfour of Burleigh wore optimistic. Dr. George Eobsou, a former Moderator of the United Free Church Assembly, stated that the joint committee had agreed that it was not just that the lawshould only recognise the Established Church, The agreement up to this point was a hopeful sign. The chief difficult would be to frame conditions of union in no way infringing the Free Church's spiritual independence.
