Dr. Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, has returned from his Departmental visit through the South Island.
Mr. W. Pryor, secretary of the New Zealand Employers' Federation, leaves tonight for a short visit to Christchurch, on business connected with the federation.
Dr. Duncan Stout, M.R.C.S., and L.R.C.P., is cue of the latest names to be added to the medical list in London. Dr. Stout is the third son of Sir Eobert Stout, Chief Justice.
Mr. Wm. Coftej, nlio was submitted to a serious operation on Saturday evening, has undergone little change sinco the last report. He is, however, conscious, anu is able to take nourishment.
The funeral of the late Mr. Frederick Robert Hills, who died suddenly from heart disease at the Athletic Park "on Saturday last, took place yesterday morning, the interment taking place at Karori. A memorial service, conducted by the Kev. W. Fancourt iu St. Thomas's Church, Newtown, was attended by the members of tho St. James Football Club, for which club a son of the deceased vras playing at the time of his death. Mr. John Prouse, of FroiiFe Lumber, Ltd., for which firm the deceased acted as accountant, was also among those- present.
Mr. Ernest Parkes, the popular baritone vocalist, is confined to his room, through a slight indisposition.
Mr. Cedric V. Fordham, who has been transferred from the Patent Office to tho Native Department, was this week made the recipient of a. presentation in the shape of a smoker's companion. Mr. E. P. O'Donnell made the presentation on behalf of the staff.
The death is announced of Professor Borden P. Bowne, of the Chair - of Philosopny of Boston University. Professor Bowne, of whose writings are well known outside of his , own country, was in hie early days a student and friend of Hermann Lotze, and to the end was the chief representative of the Lotzian school in America.
Mr. J. Lethbridge Kin", S.M., sailed from Sydney on board H.M.S. Cambrian on May 22 for Norfolk Island. He is a member of the fourth generation of his family to land on the- island. Governor P. G. King (Lieutenant. E.N.) founded the settlement in 1788, and lived there tiH 1798. His son, Admiral P. P. King, was born there, and his son, Charles M'Arthur King, was Besiaent Magistrate for five years—loo years after his grandfather had left there.
Mr. E. G. Hicks, who has severed his connection with.tho "New Zealand Freo Lauce," in order to take over the management of a newspaper at Rotorua, was, ill his official capacity as president of the Liberal and Labour Federation, entertained at a farewell "social" by that organisation last evening. The function was held at Murdoch's Rooms, Cuba Street, and proved to be a pleasant little gathering. Mr. C. J. Plaff, a vicepresident of the association, .was in the chair, while the Hoe. D. Butldo, Minister for Internal Affairs, and Mr. Eaploy, Liberal organiser, were also present. A number of musical items and recitations were given during the evening, whfe felicitous speeches were made by the chairman, the Hon. D. Buddo," Mr. Arnold, and others. The meeting, by resolution, placed on record its appreciation of the services of Mr. Hicks in the interests of the association -
Mr. E. Tait, assistant-postmaster at Christclmrch, who is retiring on superannuation after ii years of service, presented last evening with an album signed by the chief officers in the Postal Department throughout New Zealand — Press Association. ' .
Mr. G. Craig was yesterday the recipient of a presentation from the Customs landing waiters' staff on the occa-. sion of his promotion to the position of chief clerk in the head office.
The death is announced from Palmeratou North of Dr. J. H. L. Maclntire, a very old resident of that district.
