Following an impassioned denial by Senator Loriincr in the United States Senate, that he had bought his senatorship, Senator Holt Law (an Illinois State Senator) has confessed to the Grand Jury that Mr. Broderick (another State Senator) paid him 2500 dollars (=£soo) for voting for Senator Lorimer. The Ruuhine, from London, via Cape Town and Hobart, was berthed at the Queen's Wharf yesterday morning. She brought 213 passengers of all classes. Of the 140 in the third class, thirtv were "assisted"—23 odnlts and ? children. I'ho adults comprised 11 domestic servants, 8 wives coming to join their husbands, 1 farmer, and one housekuopor. Eleven ndults and 7 children wero nominated by relatives in New Zealand, and 12 adults wore approved by. the High Commissioner. A French lady, three Danos, and a Swede wore among the passengers, and .successfully passeil tho education test.

Ell, Jf.P., has promised to introduce a Bill to relieve nil sports grounds not run in proprietary'interest from payment of tke whole ur a portion of local rales. Arrangements have been mado with most of the owners whose property it will be necessary to traverse for the construction of the Wadeslown tramway, and this work will now be vigorously pushed ahead from several different points.
