AN OCCUPANT BADLY HURT. (By Telegraph—Press' Association.) Napier, May 29. Shortly after nine o'clock on Saturday night a fire broke out in Slade's hotel on the Marino Parade. It quickly spread to the adjoining buildings, and did a largo'amount of damage before it was subdued. . The private hotel was a wooden twostory. building, containing thirty-two •rooms, and it was, with its contents, completely destroyed. A cottage of. seven rooms, also owned by Mr. Slade, and used in connection with his boarding establishment, was badly '. gutted. The majority of the boarders lost ■everything except what they were wearing- ,
Mr. George Rymer's residence, and a .oottage occupied by Mr. Edward Ash"fcon, and owned by Mr. R. L.: Williams, ■caught 1 fire, and were both completely destroyed. Mr. Slade's stable, and those of Mr. John Skews, cab proprietor, were also destroyed, but horses and vehicles were saved. The flames readied the scullery of Mr. Skew's house, but were then checked by the brigade. Other buildings were considerably scorched as there was a strong westerly wind blowing. When . the fire was at its height a man named James O'Connor, aged about 55, who slept in a portion of the' loft of Slade's stables, was badly hurt by jumping to the ground. He lost his clothing and about £20 ill cash. The insurances are as follows: — Slade's private hotel, £1300 on the building in the Liverpool and London and Globe; furniture, £640 in the Australian Alliance. Slade's cottage, £200 on the building in the New Zealand office, and £100 in the Royal Exchange; furniture, £100 in tho Australian Alliance. Slade's stables, £100 in the Royal Exchange. Skev.'s dwelling; £200. Stables, £30, and horse feed £10, all in the Phoenix office. Rymer's . buildings, £700 on' tho building, and. £200 on the furniture in the National office. Ashton's building and furniture, £200 in the Queensland office. _ Williams's building, £300 in the Alliance office. Two of Slade's boarders, namely, Mr. S. T. Jenldnson and Miss R. A. Midgley, hud,-their personal effects insured for £50 each with the Norwich Union. Mr. Rymer's residence was built about four years ago at a cost of £1100.
