WELLINGTON HIGH SCHOOLS.
BOARD OF GOVERNORS. Tho monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of Wellington College and the Girls' High School was held yesterday, there being present: Tho chairman (Mr. A. do 11. Brandon), and Messrs. A. Warburton, Robert Lee, W. F. Ward, and T. M. WiJford, M.P. . Tho death of his late Majesty, King Edward VII, was formally announced, and a resolution of regret placed on record.
According to the monthly statement of finances, the actual amount standing to tho credit of the board was £205 ss. 2d. Prospective payments to the board, in respect of outstanding Tents and fees, totalled £1918 Ms. 4d., while prospective liabilities were set down at £727 13s. It was stated that the Government had paid in £1000 as an instalment of fees duo for free-place pupils. : Jliss It' Lean, principal of the Girls' High School, reporting to the board, stated that the Education Department had insisted that two girls who had qualified with distinction in tho Junior National Scholarship examination for frceplaces at the High School, and who had shown great promise at the Girls' College, could not bo granted a transfer from tho Newtown District High School to the college. She- thought that they ought to bo allowed to remain at the college. The board agreed that tho case should be considered on its merits, and decided to ask the Department to reconsider its decision, on the ground that the girls were well qualified for admission to the college. Tho only alternative was to send ther.i back to tho District High School, and debit their parents with the fees duo for the past term.
