VICE-REGAL FURNITURE
WHO WILL BE MANTTFACTTJKEBS ? For some unexplained reason the Public Works Department is unusually reticent as to which firms have successfully tendered for the supply of furniture for the now vice-regal' residence. Upon inquiry at headquarters yesterday, a Dominion reporter. was once again told that there was nothing for publication on the subject, "as all tho contracts havo not yet been signed." It appears, however, to be generally known that local firms will supply most of the articles required to be manufactured in New Zealand. So far as can bo gathered, the largest order' falls to the Scoullar Co., Ltd., which has been requested to supply furniture for two of the bedrooms and dress-ing-rooms, and in addition various articles for the kitchen and pantry. Messrs. Thompson and Holland (it is understood) have been commissioned to provide some of the furniture for tho dining-room. An order for other furniture has also been placed with the D.I.C. Mr. 11. Fielder was a successful tenderer for two small tablc-s, worth about for the drawing-rooms. Other tenderers with whom orders have been placed are stated to be Messrs. Ivirkcaldio and Stains, Liberty's, also Strange and Co. (of Christchurch). There now appears to be a general feeling among furniture manufacturers that the specifications may havo been in the nature of a "blind," and that, as a matter of" fact, most of the valuable articles in the schedule will be secured at Home, as well as the furniture and furnishings for the three principal rooms.
