THE TURF.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. IBs Glencob.j Judging by tho largo acceptances deceived for the first day's racing, tho Takapuna Jockey Club's Winter meeting should bo a very successful one. It is worthy of note- that of tho twenty-ouo horses handicapped by Mr; Geo. Morse in the Maiden Hurdles, eighteen accepted. In tho Hauraki Hurdle race, all the horees handicapped made tho acceptance. Ronald Cameron made a special trip from Melbourne to Adelaide to rido Dhobi in tho Elder Stakes,- weight-for-age, one mile and a furlong. Dhobi won easily from True Scot and sis other runners. Tho Porirua horses for tho Wanganiii Jockey Club's meeting were railed north on Thursday. Stanley Iteid will do tho light-weight riding of tho Highden horses .at the .Wanganui tixturo next week. Jloggie Paul, who won a couplo of hurdle races a littlo timo back, has gono wrong, and will havo to bo spelled. Mr, J. Chadwick has been reappointed haudicapper to tho Geraldine Racing Club. B. Deeley will not bo riding at tho Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting. He has arrived at Wanganui, where no has been engaged to rido Stoiirton and other horses. Lady Paul, who raced in tho 14.2 division among the ponies in Wellington, was considered to bo 14.3J when measured in Sydney, and Gold Cup, who competed in tho 14.3 ranks hero, is over 15 hands according to Sydney measurement. Tho ex-New Zealander, F. is , having a turn of Fortune's wheel in Melbourne at tho present time. Acer, who is trained and ridden by M'Cabo, has won the last three races in which ho has started. Since being taken to Wanganui, Continuanco has been responsible for some good work on tho training tracks. Most people were surprised at tho price at which this horse started in Hawera, as form pointed to his winning, and ho did 60, thanks to patient handling by G. Jones, who allowed Nicotine to make all the running. Then, after sho had tired, tho big strides of Continuance told, and ho ran in a very easy winner. In the Flying Handicap, fivo furlongs and a half, at Kensington, Sydney, on May 11, tho New Zealand pony Lady Paul was backed by her owner to win a substantial amount, but sho was unfortunate enough to receive a kick at tho post that probably affected her chance. Sho had 9sl. lib. (7st. ■ 71b. minimum), and was ridden by H. Mai' lowes. ■ At a larg'ely-atteuded meeting of trotting enthusiasts on Thursday, Mr: G. [White in the chair, it was decided (says our Palmerston correspondent) to form a trotting body, to bo called tho Manawatu Trotting C'mb. ' All present were-formed into a Provisional Committee to canvass for members, and to ascertain what grounds aro available. Messrs. H. Gillies, E. Wood, W.-Jewell, H. J. Wopdfkld, and P. F. O'Connor were appointed to wait on tho A. and P. Association with reference to securing the show grounds for trotting meetings. Mr. W". Jewell was appointed secretary pro torn. It is expected that tho club will'start with a,.membership ■of two hundred. ■ . . ' , • It was intended to ship Kakama to jWanganui on Tuesday last, but (according to an Auckland exchange) itho , "daughter of Soult persistently, refused; to go into the horse box attached to the train, and the attempt had to bo' abandoned. During the eftori to get her into the box, Kakama got hor leg downvbotween the box and the siding,, and scraped it somewhat. This necessitated her being withdrawn from _ all .'■engagements at tho Wanganui meeting. Yankee, ' who won three races at Euntly, and-later.won at Papakurri, is engaged in the Maiden Handicap at the Takapuna "Jockey Club's meeting today. '■■:■■■■' ■' \ Mr. Middleton Melrnse left for Auckland during tho week to seo Truganirii. run in the Empire Handicap at tho Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting today. Trugfmini appears to bo remarkably well - treated in tho matter of weight, but : it is possiblo that the small course at North Shore will bo against her. ' Howevor, trainer Lowe took her north in ample time to got her used to - the circular track, and as she : is . a good" beginner (none of the other r.an- . didates'can comparo with her in this), Bheinay lead from thd start. The Hutt contingent for tho Wanganui meeting—Penates, Hydrant, Moccasin, BaUaral, Xavier, Royal Marino —will ■ ledvQ for Wanganui this morning, in charge of their respective trainers. -Such \a well-pnrformed lot oannot but run. prominently in tho different . eyento,' but /they will have strong opposition to" eontond with, as some of the best performers in th'j Dominion will bo seen at the Wanganui fixture."

Maiora, who' is a candidate for the big jumping events later in the season,

and who is said to he an adept fencer, has only 9st. 111b. in tho. Maiden Hurdle Race at Takapuna to-day.

Nelius, who, it will bo remembered, ran second in the Scurry and tho Haiden at Woodville in February,.is Migaged in the Ngataringa Handicap at the Takapuna meeting to-day. Since joining C. Coleman's team at Ellerslie, Nelius is. reported to havo made wonderful improvement. OFFER FOR A RACEHORSE REFUSED. By Teleerapn—l'rc33 Association—Copyright Melbourne, May 19. An offer of 1200 guineas, on the part of an Indian buyer, was refused for tho lacehorse Conge d'Eslire. TRAINING AT WANCANUI. . (By TeJeerttDh-l'rcea Association.! Wanganul, May 19. Some interesting work was done on ih'o .tracks this morning. Celaeno and St. Bill galloped six furlongs, tho latter having the best of tho set-to. Nyland jumped away well clear of Boanerges in a five-furlong spin, and though the- latter showed great dash, Nyland finished in front in Imin. 4see. Voca nnd Seawind ran the same distance in lmiri. 7scc, the fornier having something in hand.
