LAND BALLOT. CLANDEBOYE SETTLEMENT. Tlmaru, May 19. The ballot for Clandoboye Settlement, suitable for dairy purposes, took place at Tcnraka to-day. For the 13 sections there were 114 applicants,-102 going to the ballot. There were no applicants from the North Island. Details of the ballot :— Section 4, 51 acres, Minnie J. Sherratt (Wakanni). Section 5, 49 acres, G. Brown (Allanton). . Section 6, 95 acres, Charles Patchett (Flaxton). Section 7, 43 acres, W. J. Pearse (Timaru). Section 8, 30 acres, Jane' S. Yonng (Domett). Section 9, 60 acres, E. Thompson (Ashburton). Section 10, 51 acres, D. F. O'Connell (Seadown). Section 11, 47 acres, R. M. Sievwright (Ashburton). Section 12, 75 acres, J. Barry (Temuka). Section -18, 56 acres, R. M'Millan (Christchurch). MAGNETIC STORM. Christchurch, May 20. A slight magnetic storm was experienced in Christchurch, commencing shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday, and continuing with increasing -strength until 8.20 p.m. The storm lasted until--4 a.m. to-day. It is extremely improbable that the storm is at all attributable to the earth's passage through the comet's tail. In May and September last year magnetic storms were experienced of greater strength than the one yesterday..

At the Magistrate's Court, Balclutha, yesterday seven firms were charged with failing to give notice to the clerk of the conrfc at Balclutha of liquor sent to Clutha, a No-License district. £he evidence showed that in each case proper notice had been received by the clerk at Balclutha within a few days of the dispatch of the. liquor, but Mr. Bartholomew,, 5.M.," upheld his previous decision, that notice should be sent coincident with the liquor, or •at all events on the day following. Alexander Young, a decrepit old man of seventy years, appeared in court today on a charge of stealing £12 4s. from the cashbox of the Whakapara Post Office. A Supreme Court action in which Joseph Waddell, school teacher, 'claimed £600 damages from Andrew Harvie for alleged malicious statements, was concluded torday. The jury returned a verdict for plaintiff for £125, with costs. THE ELLWOOD TRIO. Auckland, May 20. The Ellwood trio and Miss Nixon opened their Auckland season to a crowded house last night, and met with a very enthusiastic reception. The boy George, aged 11, electrified hia hearers on the 'cello.. He plays the most difficult compositions from memory with remarkable finish and expression. "ARRESTED" BARQUE RELEASED. Christchurch, May 19. The barque Solgran, which was arrested at Lyttelton on Saturday last, under warrant. of the Vice-Admiralty Court, in connection with a claim for salvage, was released this morning. It is understood that the owners and the insurance company interested in tho vessel have given a bond for value of the ship's cargo and freight. The vessel will now be able to make a start to discharge her cargo.
