Japan, it seeius, is steadily increasing its consumption of wool, and the Commercial Commissioner of New South Wales in. the East in' a;rCceut report states that during 1909 the. total importation of wool and. woollen' gooda into Japan was £1.694,651 in value, an increase of £351,120 upon the previous year, lu wool and wool tops the total importations for 1909 equalled £909,200, as compared with £685,017 for 1908 or an increase of £224,183. Of the. 19C9 importations, £604,469 was for tops, the same as arc now being made in Sydney, and £304.732 was for raw wool.'Seeing that the importations' for the previous year were £434.646 for tops and £250.371 for raw material, it would bo observed' that satisfactory increases had taken place. In a report dated Londou, April 8, Messrs. Gilbert Anderson aud Co. state:— The meat trade during the week has fallen considerably. The weather has not been favourable; a much quieter tone has prevailed ail over the market. Supplies of frozen meat have been more than tho requirements, and prices for the better qualities have weakened. High prices asked tor frozen meat have restricted trade. The slight difference in price between the various qualities is preventing the consumption ol large quantities. Shipments from the liiver Plate have been largely increased. Anticipated heavy shipments which are expected from New Zealand are depressing the market. Canterbury mutton is from 1-16 to £d. lower. North Island 3-16ths lower.
