Dunedin, May 11 To-day abcmt 100 unemployed gathered in front of the Trades Hall, and marched to tho "Evening Star" office, to lay their case before the editor. The Mayor has undertaken to do ail in his power to find work for the men on city works, particularly on the duplication of the Anderson's Bay tram line, which, how* ever, cannot be proceeded with pending the receipt of an Order-in-Council. SURVEY OF DUNEDIN. Dunedin, May 15, The report of the Works Committee of the City Council states that, in reply to a communication received from tho Department of Lands, Wellington, an oli'er has been made, subject to confirmation, of £2000 as the City Council's contribution towards the cost of making a standard survey of tho city, £1000 of sucli sum to be payable in April, 1911, and the balance on completion of the work^ FIRE AT INVERCARGILL Invercargill, May 14. A firo broke out at one this morning in a two-storied wooden building occupied by E. A. Phillips, photographer, j ~w as, suppressed by the prompt action or the brigade. Damage to the building amounts to <£100, and the stock suffered seriously from smoke and water. The outbreak appears to have been caused by a gas jet left burning in a cupboard. Tho building was insured for £500 in the North British, and the stock for £SQQ in the Victoria. A SOUTHERN AEROPLANE. Dunedin, May Is. Mr. J. H. Gill, of South Dunedin, hafl completed an aeroplane 35ft. lung, and with 32ft. span for competition fox tho Commonwealth prize of £10,000. The "Wairoa County Council yesterday, voted unanimously the £40 per annum, required by the Hawke's Bay County Council as a contribution to the Esk thus assuring the construction of the last bridge on the Wairoa-Napier Road. WOODWARE FACTORY BURNED. Taihape, May 14. Hollow's woodware factory was totally destroyed last night, nothing being saved. The origin of the fire is a - mystery. The insurances are £600 in tho Alliance office, £500 in the Commercial, and £300 in the Sun. A valuable cat* lection of tools belonging to the employees was also destroyed. The uniiy sured damage is estimated at £3000
