SHIP ARRESTED AT LYTTELTON.
THE CJUAINT WAY OF DOING £ft (By TelesrraDU-Press , Aj-eoristionJ Christchurch, May 14. W. Samson, Marshal of the Vice* Admiralty Court, went to Lyttelton with a sheriff's officer, and two bailliffs, and arrested the barque Solgran, under a warrant claiming .£SOO for salvage. The claim is mado by Frank Merton Calvdrt, of Hobart, master mariner, and salvage operations are alleged to hare taken place on the River Derwent, Tasmania, on April 27, 1910.
When the marshal proceeded to nail the customary documents to the mast, viz., a statement of claim, and the writ of arrest, the captain came on board, and attempted to get the marshal to leave the ship. When matters were explained to him, however, ho withdrew his opposition, and the barque was formally arrested. It is nnderstood that the captain of the Solgran intends contesting the claim.
It appears that tho Solgran was bonnd from Port Esperance, Tasmania, with, a cargo of hardwood for Lyttelton, when she narrowly escaped being wrecked ra tho vicinity of Derwent lighthouse. She went up D'Entrecasteaux Channel, and was making for Storm Bay, when she missed stays. An attempt was then made to wear the vessel, but this failed, and she was drifting on the locks' when tho steamer Beomere arrived on the scene, and towed the Solgran to Storm Bay. Captain Halliday, of the Solgran. states that, when salved, he made the usual verbal agreement with the master of the Beemere, and, when the Solgran had been towed to a place of safely, he paid tho money.
