'« MUST BE SEATED."

(, — ■— ON THE BROOKLYN CABS. : Tho limitation of the number of passengers that may he carried in tho Brooklyn tramcars is not a new question, but it was evident, at last night's meeting of tho Municipal Electors' Association of that suburb, that the subject is still a "live" one. It was alluded to in the annual report of tho executive as follows:—"It is pleasing ■to noto that tho drastic course followed formerly of allowing only four passongors to each .scat has been relaxed. A deputation waited upon- tho Minister for Public AVorks in tho matter of the restriction placed on the Brooklyn tram traffic, but was. unsuccessful in obtaining any mitigation thereof. It is. hoped, however, that specially-made cars for Brooklyn will overcome tho difficulty." ' Mr. Hendrikson said he had been told by a conductor that the rule was stjll in force, and that.all passengers must "sit- on wood." Mr. R. C. O'Connor said he had seen ladies sitting on gentlemen's knees at the conductor's request. He pointed out that the tramways authorities woro bound by the decree 'of tho' Public Works Department,' and could not absolutely disregard it, though-they could mitigato it by allowing a little latitude. Another member said that someone had written to the press complaining that some conductors refused to take more than the legal number of passengers, and tho consequence was that all the conductors had been instructed not to carry more people than there were seats for. Councillor Frost, on being appealc! to, said the instructions to' conductors wore not to carry more passengers than could be seated irrespective of tho number. A good deal, of course, depended on the conductor's digestion. He had come up with people sitting on the knees of others. Tho association should ask the City Council to put on more or , larger cars. .' ' Mr. O'Connor agreed.with this sug- i gestion, and said the council should be asked for a throe minutes' servico, instead of a five minutes' servico at the busiest hours. , One or two members said they frequently walked because they could not find room in' the' cars. Another told of a passenger who sat on the floor of a car in order to comply with the rule, i It was also stated that a new car for the Brooklyn lino was now being tested, j It was Tesolved: —"That the City; Council bo requested to pnt on ejrtro cars on the Brooklyn tramliHg between j 5.15 and 6.15 on the evening of every ' working day, and on every wet morning."
