M'Quenney sued Constable Martin, of Bongotea for .£5 damages for alleged assault. In evidence it was stated that en April 1 last M'Quenney had been made an "April fool," and, thinking to pass the joke on to Constable Martin, sent that official on an urgent message, to a business man in the township. When the constable found out how the position stood, he did not treat the matter as a joke. He went back and gave M'Quenney a thrashing. Hence the suit for damages. The magistrate said that the action of plaintiff, in making a fool of an important official, might have led to serious consequences, and gave judgment for defendant Martin.
