ADJUTANTS AND INSTRUCTORS.
CONDITIONS OF.APPOINTMENT. Following upon the announcement by tho Prime Minister (Sir Josoph Ward), last week, that 28 permanent adjutants (commissioned officers), and 28 instructors (non-commissioned officers) would .shortly be appointed in /ionnection with tho new defence scheme, a General Order by the Council of Defenco has just been'issued, setting forth tho conditions of appointment, of which the following are the chief: — ■ 1. Applicants must bo not less than twenty-one years of age or more i than thirty-five, except in special cases, approved .by the Council of Defence. 2. On being selected, the officer or noncommissioned officer would to on probation ' for ' six months, after which time, j if reported as having given every satisfaction in the work required of him, appointment will be confirmed. 3. Successful officers •will be appointed lieutenants in tho New Zealand militia. They will be required to resign their commissions if serving in the territorials. . 4. Successful non-commissioned officers will be appointed sergeants-instructor on the militia staff, and if recommended after three years' service will be promoted Bergean'J-majoTS-inßtructor, and after a further two years' service warrant officers. SCALE OF PAY. Officers. Captains: ,£3OO to ,£350, and house allowance of ,£SO, inless' freo quarters available. Lieutenants; *6200 to tfnd houso allowance of *650, unless free quarters available. Non-commissioned Officers. I- £ Sergeants-instructor 160 Sergeants-major JBO Warrant officers 200 Previous service in equal grade in the New Zealand < permanent fctaff or permanent force is to count towards obtaining the higher rate of pay, but the increment in all cases is dependent upon efficiency and report, and, if required, a qualifying examination.

The Wellington Golf Club insert an advertisement stating that entries for Men's Monthly Cleek (medal) close ou May 12.
