LAWN TENNIS
. DAVIS CUP IMBROGLIO.' ' The following is a resolution adopted by 'the Management Committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association:— "lii view of till, fact that the president of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association has publicly criticised the action of tho committee in regard to Davis Cup matters,: and of . the evident misunderstanding that exists in reference to' ( tho ' position, this committee deßms it durable to rnako the following statement, setting forth the positions of the Australasian Association and the New Zealand Association, and of tho attitude taken by tho committee in reference to the cup." . Uhder "The Regulations for tho International Lawn Tennis Championship,'". Australia, with New Zealand, is one 1 notion, and Australasia is at present the- champion nation. Tho object of the Australasian Association is to control international contests held in Australasia, and the terms upon which the New Zealand Association should belong to the • Australasian Association have been recently ' amicably settled. One of the terms is that the contest for 1910 shall ba held in New Zealand. The regulations provide that : the governing organisation of the champion nation (in this •case is the Australasian Lawn Tonnis Association) shall, appoint a committee to manage the competition. The location _ rests with the Committee of Manage- ' , ment so appointed. , 'As the next contest is to be held in New Zealand, the committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association believed that the Australasian' Lawn .Tennis Association would oppoint a New Zealand Committee to . manage the Davis Cup. competition, and urged that body -to, .make the appointment as soon as < possible. Notwithstanding these representations, the Australasian Association delayed making the appointment, and when it did so, it, contrary to expectations, appointed itself as tho Committee of Management, and did not officially notify the New Zealand Association that it had done so. A special meeting of the - Committee ef the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association was called for March 17 to decide what action it should take, and it then resolved that Wellington was . the most suitable place for the competir tjon. Since the location has been decided, the committee of the New Zealand Lawn ■Tennis Association.again urged the Davis Cnp Committee to delegate its powers to a New Zealand committee, but it has decided not to do so. It has now appointed a sub-committeo (consisting of the, present members of tho committee _ of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association) to carry out the required details under its supervision.' Tho committee of the Now Zealand Association, in making its recommendation that Wellington should bo tho locale, fully appreciated the services rendered to the-champion nation of Australasia by tho New Zealand representative, Mr. A; Wilding, in the Davis Cup contests, but felt that the interests of all players and followers of tho sport in New Zealand would be best served if the contest took place in the centre of Now Zealand.
