SHIPPING DELAYED.

All day yesterday there was a stiff "blow'' from the south-east, .and a thick drizzling rain fell intermittently. Steamers, arriving in port in tho .morning reported thick weather'-in Cook • Strait and a heavy sea. Those that had arrived from the north all made longer passages than usual. The Aorere had to contend' with head seas practically 'all the way from Patea, and she occupied 25 hours on the journey. The Union Company's passenger steamer Tarawera, which left Napier at 10 p.m. on Monday, was expected to reach Wellington at 3 p.m., hut she did not put in an appearance till after eight o'clock in the evening,' and then she took up an anchorage in tho stream to await daylight before berthing. The departure of. the Patesna, from Picton for Wellington, was postponed till 2 o'clock this morning, and. she should arrive about 7 a.m. Several steamers left port during the- afternoon, and evening, the Alexander, Mapourifci, Mararoa, and Kapuni being among the number.. The Kiripaka and the Wakatu put back, after getting-as far as the Heads, and the Aorere, Kahu, Stormbird, Blenheim, and several • others remained in port on account of the adverse weather conditions. Vessels expected as soon as the weather moderates are the Holmdale from Timaru, the Putiki from Westport, and the Waimea from Wanga« nui.
