• EJECTED, ARRESTED, AND DIED. (By TelcEraph—Press Association.) Dunedin, May 9. Henry Arnold Johnson, a seafaring man who had been drinking heavily or late, was ejected fiom the Occidental Private Hotel yesterday. Ho was arrested immediately afterwards, but later in the afternoon was taken to tho hospital, where he diod this morning. 'Ail inquest was held this afternoon. From the evidence it appeared that Johnson was discovered on Sunmorning lying on his bed in the Occidental Private Hotel. 'Hie proprietor thought that ho had been drinking, and, as he seemed dazed and stupid, permitted him to remain there till midday. : As ho then scorned to be on the verge of delirium tremens, the police wore asked to remove him, which they did at 1 p.m. Tho police treated it as an ordinary case of drunkenness, and Johnson was kept id a. cell under observation. At 3 o'clock his condition was alarming, and a doctor was called in. He ordered tho man's removal to the hospital, as ho was then in a state of deep unconsciousness. The symptoms shown at tho hospital ivoro consistent with a suggestion that he" had taken an orerdose of chlorodyne, and he was treated accordingly, but he died late oil Sunday night-. The boardinghouse-keerter, in the course of evidence, said that, after deceased had been removed, he searched his room for liquor, but instead found four bottles-which had contained chlorodyne. _ There was no evidtrco to show that (leeea-u'd had been drinking recently, and the coroner found that death was tine to an overdose of ehlorodyne, selfadministered, the evidence not showing whether this was accidental or otherwise. He considered that no blamo was attachable to the police. DEATH ON THE MAHENO. Auckland, May 9. The Maheno arrived early this morning after a stormy passage from Sydney. A passenger, Mrs. Harris, died on the voyage, and was buried at sea. ENGINEDRIVER'S DEATH. Christchurch, May 9. Thomas Pringle, enginedriver, who was injured at Hornby on Thursday through his head coming in contact with an overbridge, died at the hospital this morning, AUCKLAND ACCIDENTS. Auckland, May 9. Walter Corby Setton died at the hospital from internal injuries, sustained by falling from a roof at Rcmuera. - Frederick Gliding, aged 12 months, died in tho hospital as the result of burns caused by the upsetting of a lamp. LITTLE BOY DROWNED. Cisbbrne, May 9. Ferdinand Stowart, the five-year-old son of Mr. M. Stewart,. was drowned at Waikngako on Saturday. Ho had wandered to tho river hank and fallen in. Tlio driver, of a motor-car, a' young man named Inglis, came to grief at Kilbirnio at 1 o'clock yesterday morning, through a miscalculation in regard to the lights over some' excavation works at the foot of Burke Street. It appears that two lights were strung up ovor a scar on the road, and tlio driver, of tho car took them for an express. When he got up nearer the lights he.found his mistake, but it was tod lite to. avoid an accident. Tho car. ran into an electric light post, and threw tho driver, and a mail named James Scott, out on to the road. The front of "the <iar was damaged, the splash-board was broken, and one of the lamps also suffered. . Scott was cut with tho glass screen in the front of the car, but Inglis was not injured.
