THE TURF.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.

XBT Giekcob.J

The Egmont Racing Club's winter mooting takes place at Hawora tomorrow and Thursday. Tho acceptances-re-ceived for tho first events are good, and fields promise to bo large in all the events. Paisano is top weight in the Hurdle Race at Hawera to-morrow, and is con-' ceding over 3st. to some of his opponents. News. from Auckland records tho death of Mr. Stuart M'Guinness, who had. been in ill-health for some considerable time. Mr. M'Guinness was' ono of New Zealand's oldest Eports-. men, and was well-known as the owner of tho New Zealand Oup winner, Waiuku, and other horses. Nominations for tho Otaln Maori Racing Club's meeting' close on Friday .next.. Maharanui, one of the candidates for tho M'Rae Memorial at Hawera, iB engaged in the Cdntury Hurdles at Wanganui and the Great Northern Hurdles at Auckland.' Haurahi, the full-brother to Dolores, was recently sold in Auckland for 45 guineas, and will probably be shipped to Sydney- at an early date. Sir Artegal was submitted to auction in Auckland last week, but was passed in when tho bidding ceased at 215 guineas/' Continuance, who finished first and second in liis two hurdle engagements at Hastings-last month, figures among tho acceptors for the hurdle race at Hawera to-morrow. Oryx was one of the few horses which' completed the course in the last Wanganui Steeplechase, but he finished out of a place. .This year he is again being prepared for the cross-country' event at Wanganui, and may be expected to negotiate the . course Bafely, as ho has tho advantage of being able to school ovor the big country on the Rangitikei Club's. course.

Manapouri, who is at the head of tho' handicap in the principal race at Hawera to-morrow, won the- big race on both days of tho Avondale Jockey Clpi's . meeting last month, and also rail third in a 6-furlongs race, -won by Kakarna. The Sonlt gelding is very well at the present time, but the class opposed to him to-morrow is probably a triflo better than that ho met at Avondale. " - - ' ■ '

The hew " racecourse ■ at' Otaki' is in good order now, and, unless a long spell of wet weather occurs, tho racing track will: leavci .nothing to bo desired when tho wihter' meeting, comes round. Tho club is providing a plough track for the convenienco of trainers, and a thoroughly up-to-date stand is to. bo erected for tho accommodation of spoc-

tators at tho meeting. As tho now course 'is only a few minutes', walk from, tho Railway Station, it should bo tho means'of increasing the 'popularity of tho Otaki-Club's fixtures.

"Lotinga's Weekly" gives tho following brief note of D. Mahor, who, the cablegrams state, recently rode liis thousandth winner in EnglandDi Mahor as, witli : J.. H. 'Martin, -.the only American' jockey . remaining in .England out' of '.the enpirmOns influx' !of . s6ven
